Becoming a consultant; exploring identity processes in management consultancy.

Research project

As part of my PhD studies at the Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies at the University of Essex, I am researching how the professional identity of management consultants develops.

What is professional identity?

Professional (role) identity is described as a self-concept of values, norms, or behaviours that develop by taking on a professional role or position.
In my project, I would like to investigate how professional identities develop among management consultants.

How does it work?

I conduct research interviews - before or at the beginning of your consulting career, after three months and after six months. The interviews last around 45 minutes and are semi-structured allowing more room for reflection. Themes might be your experience in becoming and practising as a management consultant. Place (e.g. online), date and time are flexible.

Who am I looking for?

I am looking for students or professionals who aspire to a position in management consulting or have recently started working at a consultancy. The only requirements are a minimum age of 18 and a willingness to reflect on your professional development.

What's in it for me?

By participating in the project, you make a personal contribution to psychosocial research. In addition, you can reflect on your professional development and gain a deeper understanding of your (aspired) career. Upon completing the project, you will receive an executive research report.
